As a soon to be junior at my college, I am stuck getting a new laptop, with my choices being an aluminum MacBook or a Dell Latitude 6400 or something like that. I hate to say it, but I almost went with the dell. it had a SATA port and FireWire, along with a built in camera and all the bells and whistles. Yes, I did still choose the Mac, but I regret to say I actually thought about the Dell for awhile. As much as I need the FireWire, I hate Windows even more.
Dad and I had a thought this evening, would a PC card reader with a FW card allow you to download video, although that wouldn't allow you to boot to target mode.

I am soooo very cross that the macbook has no firewire. My white macbook is broken so many times apple are going to replace it! I can't afford to pay to upgrade to a macbook pro (and its a lot bigger and heavier to lug around all day.) and i don't want to get a new video camera. Apple bring back firewire, please!!!
I need it, everybody needs it. It will be more like a downgrade to get a new macbook. And they look so good!
Firewire FTW!!!!

no firewire ??? no mac !!!
i´ve nearly bought that macbook.
i didn´t even think about it that there
might be no fw port. it was just the usual routine to check the specifications before ordering.
first time since years that i´m interested in pcs again. i definitley won´t buy a macbook pro. for that money i´d buy a pimped up high end pc notebook
in my music store. they are very good.
an ordinary macbook would do it for me -
but without firewire? no way!

I am sad to see the FW port removed from the new Macbook but I am much more concerned that this staple of the A/V world might be phased out. I will have thousands of dollars of unusable equipment if no firewire becomes the standard - if that happens, I will no longer support Apple, period. I have owned six Macs over the last 15 or so years, and I own 2 iPods and an iPhone - although I realize the decision is based on financial and size stipulations, I can't help but take it personally. I paid $2400 for my MBP two and a half years ago, and I can easily replace it with a PC of the same specs for around $500 new. I would miss the nice stylish OS X interface, but as they say, "money talks, bs walks."

 Damnit! Like every one else im frustrated by the loss or fire 400 on the new Macbook! Such a usefull port should not yet be phased out and has left most of us feeling let down.
I guess i will have to save my pennies for the MBPro! Like a sheep following that shiny aluminium exterior! Mmmmm!
What until Jan/Feb 2009 Prices will drop!

Until a few years ago, people shied away from switching to Mac because Macs were not compatible with "anything". At least that was the perception.
Now any person with a cheap Dell laptop will laugh at a Macbook owner who is stuck trying to hook up a camera, audio interface or reasonably fast external drive. Once more Macs are perceived to be not compatible.
And worse, if you want to *create*, the Dell is the better hardware (the Mac has the better OS).
Apple, please undo this arrogant move and treat your customers as the people paying your salary

If the new MacBooks had FW (just one lousy 4-pin FW400), I'd buy it. MBP is out of my price range; don't lose a potentian convert, Apple. This is the sort of thing your bad rep comes from.

Removing the firewire port makes my camcorder unusable with a new macbook, so I either stick with the old one or buy a new windows machine. Either way Apple misses a sale. I am not so stupid as to buy a much more pricey machine (Pro) just to get a FW port, and I don't see why I should dump my camcorder as it works just fine and will do so for some time. And retaining the FW port in the Pro model gives the lie to the idea that FW is on the way out.

We need Firewire.
How am I supposed to connect my focusrite liquid mix or my apogge ensemble? I dont really need a macbook pro and 15" is just way too big as I need to carry load of stuff to gigs on my backpack.
This is a stupid move from apple and when my current macbook dies I will go for a pc if they dont fix this, and mind you Ive turned around 15 people to macs and have 4 of them.
Musicians need firewire!!

I was hoping to be able to buy a Macbook with firewire around christmas, so i waited for the release of the new macbook all those roumors were talking about. My main hobbies regard music and video. I have spent a lot of money on an audio interface with FW and of course on a DV camera by working overtime for months and being patient. Chopping the FW off the new macbooks forces me either to consider to buy a MBP, or to buy a PC laptop running Vista or even capable of running OSX86. I find Apple's move very annoying. It is the kind of move Microsoft did by forcing everyone to upgrade their PCs just to be able to run Vista. I will not be forced neither to sell my Audio and Video equipment, nor to spend twice the amount of money for the MacBook Pro.
The option of buying an older mac is not really an option. Faster graphics are a must if you run CPU-hungry applications on a system with shared memory graphics.
congratulations, you just lost 1 customer.
PS. A Macbook Pro with just 1 firewire port is a joke.

Bring back firewire. Two ports on the pro, one on the macbook. I have too much gear that relies on firewire. One port is not enough, and we all know that expresscard 34 is a complete joke (does apple sell any expresscard 34 --> firewire cards in the apple store? No! Guess why? They all crash your machine).

After only a week I'm taking my gorgeous new Macbook back as defective... without the FW it just doesn't work for me. This really is too bad. The MBP is so large and I can't really afford it. I'll take a look at the old MBP... But I really wanted a more discreetly sized powerhouse.

Yep. Steve emphasising that the new MacBooks are so similar to the MBPs (and so could possibly be a 12"PB replacement finally) and then omitting firewire...? This is stupid. Even consumers need Firewire – still.
And why not offer a 13" MBP? WITH Firewire. And perhaps a higher resolution display. I'd happily pay $2000 for that.
But as it is now - no. None of the new MBs or MBPs for me. Let's see what the future brings...

Lack of FireWire is the biggest drawback for me in getting a new MacBook. I have too many peripherals (2 external HDD's, external DVD burner, Camcorder, old iPod, etc.) to skip it. I think Apple could have at least offered it as a built to order (BTO) option. Sheesh.

Why do we need two usb ports? if people are gonna use a mouse with this machine, most are going to use bluetooth, and you can always get usb hubs to connect multiple usb devices. Firewire is faster, and having one of each would give the macbook much more flexibility. Plus, how can they ever justify of getting rid of target disk mode! it's saved my ass on many occasions.

Here's a real life scenario: A 1.5 GB file copied to an external drive (newly formatted SATA 2.5") takes 1 minute, 52 seconds over USB2. Over FW400, the transfer takes 1 minute, 9 seconds. In this case, FireWire has performed 62% faster than USB.

Yesterday, I plugged together a backup solution for my mom using a USB 2,5 Inch disk an a USB Hub. It took me hours an it still does not work the way it should. On my Mac, i plug in one FireWire Cable for all my disks an they run withou any problem. USB an especially USB Hubs are such a mess.

How friggin' lame to go from a rock-solid to a wonky interface system. As a video professional, this is a worst letdown from Apple in years (the next will come soon if they don't keep up with development in the video editing arena (staying ahead or alongside with Adobe, Avid).
